The Trials and Travails of Machinery

Today we were going to go camping, finally.  However, today turned out to be a badly needed shake down run that brought to light a problem that could have been bad had we discovered it on a major road trip.  We took the 1993 Roadtrek out on the town with my sister and family.  Somehow during our stopping and starting after we had dropped them off at their car, we discovered one of the front brakes was sticking.  We were close to calling a tow.  We were going to go to Topeka to visit my friend and camp at his place where we could get an electric line.  When we headed out, we noticed the problem before we left Kansas City.  We ended up in KCK, in the bad part of KCK (even got approached by a prostitoad), but we got out ok.  It got dicy on 169 northbound where there were no shoulders and the brake acted like it was going to lock up completely, but we made it home.  We will take it in to Mike's Service Center on Monday to find out what the damage is.  I suspect, that it, as many RV's do, sat for long periods of time.  That can cause things like brake calipers to stick.  Hopefully it is a brake job.  I hope it doesn't mean we need a new rotor.  We'll see.

Camper Van Beethoven

After spending the night in the driveway in the camper which went well, I took her in for inspection where we passed with no problem.  Mikes Service Center said there is a little oil seeping in the oil pan but not leaking, a windshield washer nozzle is busted and the tires look like they are 10 years old and are cracked on the sideway.  They said replace them before we take the van on a long trip as chunking might be a bad problem on the highway.  Other than that they said she is in great shape.  I took the van to an rv parts store on Southwest Boulevard/Merriam Drive in KCK.  They were really helpful.  I called around first to Olathe Ford.  They said the first time they could see me is July 3rd.  I called Camping World, and couldn't get anybody to answer the service phone.  I went to the RV place on Merriam Drive and they were really helpful.  They gave me lots of free advice.  They filled the propane tank for me -- it is 4 gallons they said, which came to $21.00.  I am very nervous about starting my propane appliances.  I will let the van sit for a day.  If I open it tomorrow, and smell gas, I will shut the valve and let it air out.  If not, I will open the windows and try to light the cooktop..  I still haven't got the Dometic fridge figured out yet.

There were some sleeping bags in the van, which I used for the night.  With the windows open and the fan going, the night was really cool for June and pleasant.

My campground for the night.  The dump hose is set out from running water through the system the day before.  I kept running water to flush the system out.

Here In My Van!

Friday 4 June 2014, we finally purchased a camper van.  We got a 1993 Roadtrek 190 Popular.  It has 33,000 original miles on it.  I have spent the last few days doing some checks on it and it seems to be in good shape.  Last night I did some driveway camping in it with Tima.  Suyen didn't want to sleep in it until she cleans it, herself.  It was very comfortable.  Today I took it in to our mechanic, and it passed inspection.

It rained hard Saturday morning, and Suyen noticed some leaks.  There were two up front at the plexiglass roof windows and possibly one above the passenger door.  They seem to be really minor.  I found one under the drivers side twin bed/bench seat which worried me as I thought it might be from the window on that side.  When I looked at it yesterday however, I removed everything and saw no sign of leakage through the wall there, so I think it came in through the vent/storage area and seeped in.
